She is determined to tell him from the moment the babe is laid in her arms, pink cheeks and gurgling and mercifully healthy, but that does not make the prospect any less daunting. He is not unkind, her husband, though she still feels more prisoner than partner, and she knows he loves their three – now four – children together. Still, she dreads asking this of him, though she knows she must; this must be the last child she bears, the maester has told her, so it is now or never.

“I want to call him Rickard,” she says firmly, interrupting his flow of Kevans and Gerions and Martyns.

Tywin stops in his tracks and stares at her, but she does not look away. She knows Eddard is out of the question, even if their second daughter was named Joanna, and Robb, Brandon and Rickon are still far too sore, but she will have a northern name for her son; she was Lady Stark for near twenty years, after all, and she will not let the Lannisters stamp out the memory of Winterfell.

Their eyes remain locked for a long time, until the babe stirs and sniffles in her arms. Suddenly, as if snapped out of a stupor, Tywin nods once.

“Very well,” he replied. “As you wish.”

It is hardly a victory, but when Rickard Lannister is named in the light of the Seven, she cannot help but call it one.
